Accused plead guilty to offences including manslaughter and failing to provide the necessaries of life. Victims were the accused’s young children. Both children were subjected to extreme neglect. Cause of death was “blunt force head injuries and malnourishment”. Accused had no record, and was “an overwhelmed, depressed and lonely mother of three young children, with little support and living in a foreign country.”

Held: 15 years jail.

Accused’s actions fell into the highest category of moral culpability as per Laberge, 1995 ABCA 196. “It is difficult to conceive of a more egregious breach of trust.”
